A PDRN booster is a topical serum containing polydeoxyribonucleotide, added to a treatment at Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria. It is applied through a device that opens temporary channels in the skin, because the molecule is too large to cross an intact surface on its own.
What PDRN actually is
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a fragment of DNA, usually derived from salmon, and it is the active ingredient behind the treatments you have seen described as salmon DNA facials.
It is used here as a topical booster, added to a treatment rather than sold as a product to take home. It goes on during a session and is driven in through channels opened by a device.
Benefits:
- Adds a hydration and skin-conditioning step to a treatment you are already having
- Pairs naturally with nano-infusion, which exists to solve the
delivery problem described below
- No needles and no additional recovery beyond whatever the base treatment involves
- Suits sensitive skin, since nothing is injected and nothing is heated
A booster added to a treatment, not a standalone appointment or a take-home product.
How it is used in a session
Choose the base treatment
PDRN is a booster, so it goes on top of something. In San Luis Obispo that is most often nano-infusion with the NanoTap pen, or microneedling. Which treatments are available depends on your office, and we will tell you what it can be added to when you book.
Open the path
The base treatment creates temporary micro-channels. This is the step that decides whether the booster does anything at all.
Apply while open
The booster is worked in while the channels are open, then a protective layer goes on top.
Applied topically through channels opened by a device. Nothing is injected.
The part nobody explains
Almost every page selling PDRN skips the only question that decides whether it works. Here it is.
Skin is built to keep large molecules out. The working rule in dermatology is that molecules much above 500 daltons do not cross intact skin. [1] PDRN fragments are enormously larger than that, measured in the tens to hundreds of kilodaltons. [1]
Which means a PDRN serum applied to intact skin, at home or in a treatment room, is very unlikely to reach the layer where it would do anything. That is not a criticism of the ingredient. It is arithmetic about the barrier.
So delivery is the entire question. Applied through the temporary channels that nano-infusion or microneedling creates, the molecule has a route in that it does not otherwise have. Applied to intact skin, it mostly sits on top.
And the injectable version is not available here. In Korea and elsewhere, PDRN is injected. Injectable PDRN is not FDA-approved for cosmetic use in the United States. [1] If you have read about Rejuran or similar treatments and are looking for them locally, that is the reason you are not finding them at a US practice offering them straightforwardly.
We would rather tell you that than let you assume a topical is the same thing.
What a PDRN booster pairs with
| Base treatment | Why it suits |
|---|---|
| Nano-infusion | Built for delivery. The obvious pairing, and the one most sessions use |
| RF microneedling | Deeper channels, more downtime, and a structural treatment in its own right |
| After a peel or resurfacing | As a conditioning step once the skin barrier has recovered |
Nano-infusion and RF microneedling are San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria treatments. Ask which base treatments are available at your office.
A physician-led approach
PDRN is having a moment, and moments produce a lot of confident marketing. What you should want from a practice is a straight answer about what an ingredient can and cannot do, and whether the version being sold to you is the version the research was done on.
That is why this page tells you the molecule is too large to cross intact skin, and that the injected form is not available in the United States. Neither fact helps sell it. Both are true, and you can only make a decision with them in front of you.
If a booster is not worth it for what you are trying to change, we will say so at a consultation and put the money somewhere it does more.
The rough ceiling for crossing intact skin. PDRN is far larger, which is why delivery decides everything.
Is it right for you?
A good fit if:
- You are already having nano-infusion or microneedling and want to get more out of the session
- Your skin is dry, stressed or reactive and you want a conditioning step
- You have read about salmon DNA treatments and want a straight account of what is available here
Worth a conversation first if:
- You are specifically looking for the injectable version, which is not available in the US
- You have a fish or seafood allergy, which is worth raising before anything derived from salmon
goes on your skin
- You want structural change, since a booster is not the treatment that delivers that
What to expect afterwards
The booster adds no recovery of its own. Whatever the base treatment involves is what you plan around: nothing for nano-infusion, a couple of days for microneedling.
Skin is briefly more absorbent after either, so keep the rest of the day simple and use sun protection.
Tell us about any fish or shellfish allergy before treatment. Reactions are uncommon and the ingredient is highly purified, but it is derived from salmon and you should be asked.
Concerns treated
A PDRN booster is used here alongside treatments for these concerns. Pick one to see how we approach it.
What treatment costs
PDRN is priced as a booster added to a base treatment, not as an appointment of its own. You are paying for the session plus the booster, and we will quote both so you can see what the addition actually costs.
Whether it is worth adding depends on what you are treating. For some concerns the money does more in the base treatment or in what you use at home, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Injectable PDRN is not FDA-approved for cosmetic use in the United States and is not offered here. The booster is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. It adds no recovery of its own beyond the base treatment it is applied with. A reaction to the serum is uncommon but possible. Tell us about any fish or shellfish allergy before treatment, because the ingredient is salmon-derived. This booster is not applied where there is an active infection or broken skin in the area.
