Nutrafol® in San Luis Obispo & Santa Maria

You noticed it in a photograph, or in the drain, or because your ponytail got thinner. Nutrafol is a daily supplement with a real six-month study behind it, which is more than most of that shelf can say. We stock it here, after somebody has worked out what is actually causing the thinning.

AT A GLANCE

Nutrafol is a daily oral supplement for thinning hair, taken as capsules rather than applied to the scalp. It is not a drug. Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics stocks it at its San Luis Obispo office and assesses the cause of the thinning first. The supporting study ran six months, which is the window before judging it.

What Nutrafol does, and what it does not

Thinning hair is one of the few things people will spend real money on before asking anybody what is causing it. The shelf is enormous, almost none of it has been studied, and the marketing is aimed squarely at how much you want it to work.

Nutrafol is a daily capsule you swallow rather than something you rub into your scalp, and what sets it apart from most of that shelf is that somebody ran a proper study on it. Seventy women, six months, half on the supplement and half on a look-alike capsule with nothing in it, and nobody knowing which until the end. The group taking Nutrafol was shedding about a third less by the end of it. [1]

Here is the part a checkout screen will not tell you: it is a supplement, not a drug, and the company that makes it paid for that study. Both of those are true and neither one makes it useless. It means Nutrafol belongs in a plan built by somebody who looked at your scalp first, alongside whatever else that exam turns up, rather than being the thing you try because it came up in an ad.

Where Nutrafol fits

  • Diffuse thinning where the whole head has less density rather than one receding area
  • Shedding that started after a pregnancy, an illness, a stressful year or a big weight change
  • The thinning that arrives with the years around menopause
  • People who want to start with something that does not need a prescription
  • As one part of a plan rather than the whole plan, which is how it is usually used here
  • People who will actually take it daily for six months, because that is the only way it gets a fair test
A third less

Shedding, by the end of a six-month study of 70 women, in the group taking Nutrafol compared with the group taking a look-alike capsule with nothing in it. The company that makes Nutrafol paid for that study, and you should hear that from us rather than find it out later. [1]

How we approach thinning hair

Work out what is actually causing it

Where you are thinning, when it started, what runs in your family, what you take, whether there has been an illness or a baby recently, and a real look at your scalp. Stress, pregnancy, the years around menopause, thyroid trouble, low iron, some medications and an irritated scalp all look nearly identical in the mirror and are not remotely the same problem underneath.

Decide whether a supplement is even the right tool

If what we find points to something a supplement will not touch, you get told that. Handing a bottle to somebody whose thyroid is the real problem is how a practice loses a patient for good, and it is why this is a dermatology appointment rather than a purchase.

Give it long enough to judge

Six months, taken daily. That is how long the study ran and it is the pace hair actually works at. We would rather set that expectation now than have you decide in week eight that nothing works.

No prescription

You do not need one, because this is a supplement rather than a drug. That cuts both ways, and knowing which of the two you are buying is worth more than any claim on the box.

Why hair thins, and why the reason changes the answer

Almost everybody who searches for a hair supplement skips this part, and it is the part that decides whether anything you buy is going to work. These are the common reasons hair thins, and they look identical in a mirror.

Genetics. The pattern kind, which shows up as a widening part or receding temples and runs in families. It is progressive, it responds best to treatment started early, and a supplement is not the main tool for it.

A shock to the system. A pregnancy, an illness, surgery, a very stressful stretch, a rapid weight change. Hair sheds all at once a few months after the event, which is why the timing never seems to match. This kind usually recovers, and the main job is supporting it while it does and not panicking.

Hormonal change. The years around menopause are the common one. Density drops gradually across the whole head rather than in a pattern.

Something in your bloodwork. Thyroid and iron are the two usual suspects. Both are common, both are treatable, and no supplement on any shelf fixes either of them. This is the reason we sometimes test before we recommend anything.

The scalp itself. Inflammation, flaking and seborrheic dermatitis make an unhappy environment for hair to grow in. Treat the scalp and the hair often improves without anything else changing.

Medication. More common than people expect, and worth going through your list properly.

Most people have more than one of these running at once. Working out which ones you have is a twenty-minute exam and some questions, and it is what turns a bottle of anything into an actual plan.

6 months

The honest window before you judge it. Three months is the earliest anything shows, because hair grows at the speed hair grows. Stopping at eight weeks tells you nothing except what two months of it costs.

Areas we treat

Scalp hair

Diffuse thinning and reduced density across the head, which is where the evidence for this product sits.

The part line

Usually the first place people notice it, and the easiest place to photograph and track over six months.

The temples and hairline

Assessed carefully, because a receding pattern points somewhere different from all-over thinning.

The scalp itself

Examined at the same visit, since inflammation and flaking are a common and fixable part of the problem.

Everything else in the picture

Your medications, your history and where relevant your bloodwork, because hair is downstream of all of it.

Services are prompt, friendly, professional and most of all comfortable. I just received a treatment and it was an extraordinary experience. I’m very pleased.

The Coastal difference

Hair loss is a skin problem before it is a shopping problem

Hair and scalp are dermatology. One visit with a board-certified dermatologist can look at your scalp properly, order blood work if your history calls for it, talk through prescription options, and reach for a supplement only if a supplement is genuinely the right answer. A checkout screen does none of that, and neither does a med spa selling one device.

It also means being told when this is not the answer. Thinning hair has a lot of causes and Nutrafol is one option among several, including PRF made from your own blood) and, where the scalp itself is the problem, a scalp treatment. At our San Luis Obispo office those are all in the same building, which means nobody here has to sell you the only thing on the shelf.

Is it right for you?

Nutrafol is probably worth trying if:

  • Your hair is thinning across the whole head rather than receding in a pattern
  • The shedding started a few months after a pregnancy, an illness or a hard year
  • You are in the years around menopause and your density has dropped
  • You want to start with something that does not need a prescription
  • You will genuinely take it every day for six months

We will suggest something else if:

  • Your history or exam points at your thyroid, your iron or a medication, which need addressing first
  • Your scalp is inflamed or flaking, where treating the scalp comes before anything you swallow
  • You are looking for a result in a month, which no product in this category can give you
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, when this is a conversation to have with your physician first

Not sure which of these you are? Almost nobody is from a mirror. That is the exam, and it is what makes the difference between a plan and a purchase.

What to expect

There is no recovery and nothing to plan around. You take the capsules daily and nothing visible happens for about three months, which is the hardest part and the reason most people quit before they have given it a fair run.

While you are taking it, do

  • Take it every day, because an inconsistent six months is not a six-month trial
  • Photograph your part line on day one, in the same light, and again monthly
  • Tell us about every other medication and supplement you take
  • Come back at three and six months so somebody other than you assesses it

While you are taking it, don’t

  • Judge it at eight weeks
  • Add three other supplements at the same time, because then you will not know what did what
  • Assume it replaces treatment for a cause we have identified
  • Start it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without speaking to your physician first

Tell us about any digestive upset, which is the most commonly reported complaint with supplements of this kind, or anything else that does not seem right. We would far rather hear from you.

Concerns treated

Hair and scalp are dermatology, and the supplement is the last decision rather than the first. Pick a concern to see how we approach it.

What it costs

Nutrafol is priced per bottle and you can buy it without an appointment. What it is worth paying for first is the exam, because the same money spent on the wrong product for six months is the actual expense here.

We do not recommend a supplement to make a sale. If your exam points at something else, that is what you will hear, and it is frequently what happens.

Nutrafol® frequently asked questions

Does it actually work?

There is a real study behind it, which is rare in this category. Seventy women took part over six months. Some got Nutrafol, some got a look-alike capsule with nothing in it, and nobody knew which until the end. The Nutrafol group was shedding about a third less by the end. Two things belong next to that: the company that makes Nutrafol paid for the study, and the women joined because they felt their hair was thinning rather than because a doctor had pinned down a cause. It is genuine evidence. It is not a drug trial. [1]

Is it a drug?

No. It is a supplement, so no prescription is needed and it is not held to the standard a prescription medication is held to. Knowing which of the two you are buying is the useful thing here.

How long before I see anything?

Three months at the very earliest and six months for a fair verdict. Anything promising you a result in a month is selling you something.

Is it better than minoxidil?

Nobody can honestly tell you that, because the study compared Nutrafol against a dummy capsule rather than against minoxidil. They are different animals. One is a supplement, the other is a medication you put on your scalp with decades of use behind it. For some people the answer is one, for some the other, and for plenty of people it is both.

Which formula would I take?

That comes out of the exam. There are separate products for women, for women in menopause, and for men, because what drives thinning is different in each.

Should I get blood work first?

Possibly, and that is exactly the conversation to have here rather than at a checkout. Thyroid and iron are the usual suspects. If something in your history points that way, we test before we recommend a bottle of anything.
