Shingles

After getting chickenpox as a child, you probably thought that you would never have to deal with those symptoms again. Unfortunately, anyone who has had chickenpox as a kid can get shingles. This type of “chickenpox in adults” is actually not uncommon. Once you have the illness as a child, the virus stays in your system and can wake up again later in life, causing a blistering rash. If this sounds familiar, our team at Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics is happy to help! Schedule your consultation today and discover all that we can do for you.

How Does Shingles Develop?

Shingles develop due to the same virus that causes chickenpox. As you get older, the risk of getting a shingles rash tends to increase. The good news is that a vaccine can prevent the risk of getting this illness. Getting this vaccine can significantly lessen your risk of developing serious complications from this issue, such as life-disrupting nerve pain. If you do get this virus, there is hope available. At our San Luis Obispo center, we can offer you treatments for shingles pain relief as well as ongoing care to ensure your speedy recovery.

What Are the Symptoms?

The initial symptom of shingles, or herpes zoster, is a rash and the appearance of bumps similar to chickenpox. If left untreated, nerve pain can develop and last long after the rash goes away. Some people have this nerve pain, called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), for many years. Getting a vaccine reduces your risk of developing this nerve pain, even more than it reduces your risk of getting the disease in the first place.

How to Address Shingles

At Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics, we can provide you with an in-depth consultation to determine whether or not you have this condition. If you are suffering from herpes zoster,  we can offer you an anti-viral medicine to prevent long-lasting nerve pain. This treatment is most effective when started within three days of seeing the rash. Anti-viral medicine can also make shingles symptoms milder and shorter. If you are experiencing bumps and itchy skin, we urge you to schedule a consultation at our San Luis Obispo center as soon as possible.
