Skin Cancer

Though skin cancer may have a low mortality rate, it should still be taken seriously. At Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics, we’re dedicated to providing you with effective cancer screening solutions and treatment services. If you are in need of a diagnosis, surgery, or referral, we can help. Our treatment options involve physical examinations and tests designed to help us arrive at an accurate diagnosis. If cancer is found, we can help you further by either providing treatment in the form of surgery and ongoing support or giving you a referral to a Mohs specialist. How Does Skin Cancer Develop?

Skin cancer most often develops when your skin is exposed to too much UV radiation. This disease can affect people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions. When melanoma occurs in those with dark skin, it’s more likely to show up in areas not normally exposed to the sun. These areas include the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Some of the most common symptoms of skin cancer include the appearance of large brown spots, moles that change in size and color, and painful lesions. If you’ve found any of these marks on your skin, we urge you to reach out to our center as soon as you can.

What Are the Symptoms?

This disease is characterized by the development of abnormal growth on the skin. There are three main skin cancer types that you should be aware of. These include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Each type of cancer has its own unique characteristics, but the abnormal growth of moles, dark patches, and lesions is a common theme. To minimize the risk of developing these cancers, you should limit your sun exposure and take protective measures such as wearing sunblock when outside.

How We Address Cancer Signs

At Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics, we work closely with our patients to come to a good skin cancer diagnosis. When you arrive for your consultation, Dr. Kilcline will begin with a visual exam of your skin. During the screening process, she will check the skin for moles, birthmarks, or other growths that are unusual in color, size, shape, or texture. This procedure usually takes 10 minutes but can reveal quite a lot. The test is comfortable and doesn’t require any pre-visit preparation or post-visit downtime. If an abnormal mole or other growth is found on your body, you may be asked to make a follow-up appointment for additional testing such as a biopsy.
