The Difference Between BOTOX® & Filler

Fillers and neuromodulators are now very common injectables that can enhance and restore your appearance. From BOTOX® to Juvéderm®, many patients are unaware of the vast differences when it comes to these age-defying, volume-restoring treatment options. Understanding the difference will help you and your provider choose the right product for you.

When it comes to helping individuals feel happy and healthy, no one does it like our Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics team. Our team is dedicated to restoring, enhancing, and regenerating your natural appearance in a comfortable and welcoming environment. With modern treatment approaches, our team can enhance your appearance in a refined and sophisticated manner without the stigma of being “overdone.” Our goal is to help you feel your most confident and vibrant!

Restore Facial Volume Loss with Fillers

Fillers, as the name implies, are designed to help fill in and restore lost volume. Fillers are primarily made from a naturally-occurring protein that contributes to the skin’s elasticity and visible plumpness. They are a soft, injectable gel composed of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid that closely resembles the hyaluronic acids our bodies naturally produce.

As we age, our natural supply of hyaluronic acid and collagen dissipates. These changes, in addition to facial bone loss and skin laxity, lead to changes creating shadows and architectural changes that are described as “sunken” or “hollow-looking” appearance. Fillers are perfect for treating areas such as vertical lip lines, thin or uneven lips, enhancing or filling in shadowy areas of the face, nasolabial folds (“parenthesis” around the mouth), and marionette lines, which extend down from the corners of the lips, diminished volume in the tear troughs, cheeks, and temples.

At Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics, our experienced injectors use their knowledge of facial anatomy and luxury brand products (or extensive lines of fillers) to ensure your comfort and care. We’re confident in our ability to deliver when it comes to ensuring you achieve the look you desire. Here in San Luis Obispo, we want to do all we can to ensure you reach your beauty goals within a comfortable and welcoming environment.

To ensure we can restore and regenerate your natural appearance, we proudly offer a number of fillers, including Restylane Contour®, JUVÉDERM®– Ultra, VOLLURE™ XC, Voluma™ XC, RHA® dermal fillers– RHA®2, RHA®3, and RHA®4. If you’re unsure which one is right for you, don’t worry, our skilled team is here to help you choose the best brand based on your needs.

If You Want to Reduce Wrinkles or Fine Lines, We’ve Got You Covered

Let our team at Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics put your mind at ease. Although some find the name BOTOX®, Xeomin®, or Dysport® confusing, these FDA-approved treatments are performed with the greatest precision to ensure all our patients achieve natural-looking results.

All neuromodulators block signals to the nerves, weakening your muscles from contracting, resulting in a relaxed and softened appearance for up to three months. Results will be seen as early as three days – the full impact can be seen around 10-14 days. After 3-4 months, as the communication to the muscle begins to come back, any lines and wrinkles that were originally there will begin to reappear but may still appear softer. Neurotoxins are great for not only smoothing and diminishing lines but also for preventing the increased intensity of those lines as we age.

These are commonly used in areas of facial expression: crow’s feet or lines around the eyes, forehead lines, furrows between our brows or the “11’s”, lip lines, gummy smile, bunny lines on the nose, neck bands, softening a square jaw line, treat the dimpling of the chin.

BOTOX® vs. Xeomin® vs. Dysport® – what’s the difference?

At Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics, we carry three different neuromodulators in order to make the best selection based on the individual needs of the patient. Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences.

BOTOX® and Xeomin® are like fraternal twins -the exact same molecule of botulinum is used; however, Xeomin® is a purified form of botulinum toxin while BOTOX® includes an additive originally thought to preserve the formula. Both have been compared head-to-head in clinical studies and performed in exactly the same manner. Dysport® is like a cousin – a slightly different molecule within the same family of botulinum. It may have subtle advantages for very expressive patients. Many patients also feel it “kicks in” a bit faster with a slightly longer duration. We can help you decide which is best suited for your desired aesthetic during your appointment.

Combine the two treatments for a well-rounded enhancement

Combining treatments allows for a comprehensive and restorative approach to yield long-lasting results. While neurotoxins and dermal fillers treat different types of signs of aging, using them together can prolong the anti-aging effects of your cosmetic treatment and create a natural, more youthful appearance.
