What Is a Preventive Skin Cancer Screening?
A preventive skin cancer screening, often called a full-body skin exam, is a comprehensive evaluation of your skin performed by our board-certified dermatologist or Advanced Practice Practitioner.
During this appointment, your provider carefully examines your skin from head to toe, looking for:
- New or changing moles
- Irregular or asymmetrical lesions
- Suspicious growths
- Signs of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma
- Other concerning skin changes
Even if you have no symptoms, routine skin checks are an important part of preventive health care. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, and early detection significantly improves outcomes.
Many patients choose to schedule annual skin exams as part of a proactive, long-term approach to their health.
Why Insurance Coverage Can Vary
This is where confusion often begins. Insurance companies determine how visits are classified and covered. In dermatology, appointments typically fall into one of two categories:
Preventive – A routine screening with no specific symptoms or concerns reported.
Diagnostic – A visit that includes evaluation or treatment of a specific concern, such as a changing mole, rash, acne flare, suspicious lesion, or a procedure like a biopsy.
While a visit may begin as preventive, coverage can change if your provider identifies a concerning lesion that requires closer examination, testing, or treatment. Additionally,once a medical issue is evaluated or addressed (such as acne, rosacea, eczema, etc), insurance carriers may classify the visit as diagnostic.
It is important to understand that these determinations are made by your insurance company based on your individual plan. Coverage varies widely, even among patients with similar visits.
