Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a condition that involves the appearance of rough, dry, scaly patches of skin. People usually develop these precancerous skin lesions due to excessive sun exposure. Most people develop more than one AK, and if that is the case for you, our team at Coastal Dermatology + Aesthetics can offer you the relief you need. AKs feature precancerous skin cells, but if they are left untreated, actinic keratoses may turn into a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, it is essential that you make an appointment and have Dr. Kilcine examine your condition as soon as possible.

How Does Actinic Keratosis Occur?

Actinic damage usually occurs when ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning beds hit our skin. When we’re young our bodies are able to repair this damage. But over time, that actinic damage can accumulate and become harder and harder for the body to address. If the situation becomes too extreme, an actinic keratosis is likely to follow. If you have this condition, don’t panic! Treatment options in the form of topical medication are available. If you’re in need of a more powerful and decisive treatment, we happily provide Photodynamic Therapy at our San Luis Obispo center.

What Are the Symptoms?

This skin condition often appears as a series of small dry, scaly, or crusty patches on the skin. These patches may be red, light or dark tan, white, pink, flesh-toned, or a combination of colors. In some cases, the patches may be raised. Due to their rough texture, actinic keratoses are often easier to feel than see. If you notice any rough or bumpy patches of skin anywhere on your body, coming in for a consultation can help diagnose this condition.

Treating Actinic Keratosis With Photodynamic Therapy

If you have actinic keratoses along your face and scalp, Photodynamic Therapy treatments may be effective in alleviating your issue. This specialized form of treatment uses a light-sensitizing topical gel. After applying this gel to your treatment area, we will then expose it to blue light to kill the actinic keratosis cells. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a great and effective, “one and done” treatment for destroying lesions without causing damage to nearby healthy tissue.
