## What Sculptra does for your face

There is a kind of aging that has nothing to do with lines. The face has not wrinkled so much as emptied. The cheeks have flattened, the temples have gone in, the light no longer catches where it used to, and the whole thing reads as tired rather than as older. Filling one spot does not fix that, because nothing in particular is wrong. Everything is a little less.

Sculptra addresses it differently from everything else we inject. It is not a filler and it does not occupy space. It is poly-L-lactic acid, and what it does is set off the process by which your own skin builds collagen. Over the following months your face rebuilds its own support, so the volume you end up with is tissue you grew rather than gel someone placed.

That is also why it looks the way it does. Nobody can point at what you had done, because there is no discrete thing to point at. Your face has simply come back up. The trade is patience: this treatment does not reward anyone who wants to look different by Friday.

**What Sculptra is good at**

- Broad, diffuse flattening across the cheeks and midface, where a single syringe of filler would look like a single syringe of filler
- Temples that have hollowed and made the whole upper face read as drawn
- Restoring support under the smile lines and marionette lines rather than filling the crease itself
- A change nobody can identify, which is what most people actually want and rarely ask for
- Results that held for up to 25 months after the last session for some people in the trial [3]
- Building your own tissue rather than adding a product to it

Your own collagen

What you end up with. Sculptra does not add volume; it prompts your body to rebuild what it stopped making. The fullness you see the day of treatment is fluid and it goes away. What replaces it is yours.

## How treatment works

### We work out whether the loss is diffuse

Sculptra suits broad, gradual thinning across the face far better than one defined hollow. If what you have is a single correction in a single place, a [hyaluronic acid filler](/treatments/juvederm-fillers/) does it better and faster, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a course.

### Treat, then wait

The product goes in and you leave looking fuller. That is fluid and it settles within days, which catches people out if nobody warned them. The real change starts underneath and builds quietly from there.

### Reassess, then treat again

Each session is planned from how you responded to the last one, not from a fixed protocol. That is the entire reason this is delivered as a series, and it is why the plan you leave with after session one is not final.

Typically 3

Treatment sessions. Galderma's own patient guidance is one to four sessions, typically three, scheduled three to four weeks apart. Yours comes from how much volume has gone and how you respond, and you get the number before you commit to anything. [3]

## What the next six months actually look like

Sculptra rewards patience more than any other treatment we offer, and knowing the timeline in advance is what makes it so satisfying. Here is exactly how it unfolds.

**The day of.** You look fuller leaving than you did arriving. Enjoy it, and do not get attached to it, because it is fluid from the injection and it is not your result.

**Week one.** That fullness goes and your face looks the way it did before you came in. This is the part nobody prepares people for, and it is completely normal. Nothing has failed.

**Weeks two to six.** Not much visible. Underneath, the process that builds collagen is running. This is where the treatment is actually working and where it looks like it is not.

**Month two onward.** The change starts arriving, and it arrives slowly enough that you will notice it in photographs before you notice it in the mirror. Take a picture on day one. You will want it.

**Month three to six.** The result you came for, built out across however many sessions your plan called for. This is where it gets judged, and where the people around you start saying you look well.

Your sessions sit inside that: typically three of them, three to four weeks apart, so the injecting is done inside the first couple of months and the rest of the timeline is your own tissue doing the work. [3]

Months

The interval between a Sculptra before-and-after pair, not weeks. Judge this treatment at the far end. Anyone showing you a two-week Sculptra result is showing you swelling.

## Areas we treat

### Cheeks and midface

The main event. Rebuilds the support that has flattened, which lifts everything below it rather than adding weight to the lower face.

### Temples

Hollowing here is what makes the upper face read as drawn, and filling it back out quietly changes how rested you look.

### Smile lines

Restores the support underneath the fold, which does more than treating the crease on its own.

### Marionette lines

Rebuilds around the lines that frame the mouth and pull its corners downward.

### Chin

Restores projection and softens chin wrinkles, which changes the profile more than most people expect from an area they never think about.

The Coastal difference

## Treatment you cannot take back

Here is the thing about Sculptra that determines who should be injecting it. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved. Poly-L-lactic acid cannot. There is no enzyme for it. Whatever goes in is going to run its course, which means the decisions made at your appointment about how much and where are decisions you live with rather than decisions you revise.

That is why we treat conservatively and build across a series rather than aiming for the whole correction in one sitting, and why candidacy gets assessed properly before anyone picks up a syringe. It is also why we will tell you when Sculptra is the wrong answer. It is superb at broad [facial volume loss](/conditions/facial-volume-loss/) and early [sagging skin](/conditions/sagging-skin/), and it is genuinely poor at chasing one specific line, which a [hyaluronic acid filler](/treatments/juvederm-fillers/) does better in a single visit. If you want a result before an event next month, this is not your treatment and we would rather say so now than take your deposit.

## Is it right for you?

**Sculptra is probably a good fit if:**

- Your face has flattened generally rather than developed one hollow you can point at
- You want a change nobody can identify as a treatment
- You are willing to wait several months for the result and to come back for the sessions
- Your temples or cheeks have gone in and made you look tired regardless of how you feel
- You would rather build your own tissue than top up a gel every year

**We will steer you somewhere else if:**

- You want to look different for something happening in the next few weeks
- What you have is one defined line or one specific hollow, where filler does it better
- You have an infection or an active breakout in the area, which needs to clear first
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, when we defer elective treatment
- Your medical history makes you a poor candidate, which is part of the labeled indication and something we go through properly

Not sure which of these you are? That is the consultation, and it is a dermatologist's assessment rather than a sales appointment.

## What to expect afterward

Expect some swelling, possibly a bruise, and tenderness at the injection sites for a few days. You may be able to feel a little firmness under the skin early on, which is normal and settles. The main thing to expect is what does not happen: the fullness you leave with goes away, and the real change has not started yet.

**In the first weeks, do**

- Follow the massage instructions you are given, exactly and for as long as we say
- Come to your planned sessions, because the series is the treatment
- Keep your usual skin care and sun protection going
- Tell us about any firmness or lump you can feel, promptly rather than at your next visit

**In the first weeks, don't**

- Treat the immediate fullness as your result, or panic when it goes
- Massage differently from the way you were shown, or skip it because you forgot
- Judge the treatment at two weeks, or at six
- Assume this can be dissolved like a hyaluronic acid filler, because it cannot

Call us about anything severe, worsening, or simply not what we described: significant pain, blistering, signs of infection, any change in vision, or any reaction that does not match what we discussed. We would far rather hear from you.

## Concerns treated

Sculptra is the answer when the problem is everywhere and nowhere in particular. Pick a concern to see how we approach it.

## What treatment costs

Sculptra is priced per vial, and what you pay depends on how much volume has been lost and how many sessions your plan calls for. Because this is a course rather than a visit, we quote you the whole plan at your consultation instead of one number that grows later.

We stage your plan across sessions with less product in each, building gradually to the result rather than rushing it. With a collagen stimulator, that measured approach is exactly what produces the natural look people come here for.

Treatment time

30 to 60 minutes per session

Downtime

Usually minimal, with some swelling and possible bruising

Results appear

Gradually, over several weeks to months

Results last

Up to 25 months after the last session for some people in the trial

## Sculptra® frequently asked questions

**Q: Is Sculptra a filler?**

Not in the usual sense. A hyaluronic acid filler occupies space the moment it goes in. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, usually shortened to PLLA, and it prompts your own collagen production instead. The volume you end up with is tissue you built, which is why it arrives gradually and why it behaves differently as it goes.

**Q: When will I see results?**

Weeks to months, not days. There is a whole section above on what the timeline actually looks like, and it is worth reading before you book. The short version: the fullness on day one is fluid, the real change starts around month two, and you judge it at three to six months.

**Q: How many sessions will I need?**

Galderma's own patient guidance is one to four sessions, typically three, scheduled three to four weeks apart. That is the real range and we would rather you had it before you walk in than after. Where you land inside it depends on how much volume has gone and how you respond to the first session, and we set your spacing from that rather than from a calendar. You get your number at consultation, before you commit to anything. [3]

**Q: Can it be reversed?**

No. There is no enzyme for poly-L-lactic acid the way there is for hyaluronic acid. That is the single most important practical difference between this and the fillers, and it is why we dose conservatively and build up across sessions rather than aiming for the full correction at once.

**Q: What is it approved for?**

Sculptra is indicated for use in people with healthy immune systems for correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies, fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region, and other facial wrinkles. The immune-system wording is part of the labeled indication, which is why your medical history is a real part of candidacy here rather than a formality. [1][2]

**Q: What about lumps?**

Firmness you can feel is the thing people ask about most. The risk is reduced by correct dilution, correct depth, even distribution and conservative dosing, which is most of what technique means with this product, and by following the massage instructions you are given. Tell us promptly about anything you can feel rather than waiting for your next appointment. Early is easier.

2023

The year Sculptra's FDA approval expanded to cover fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region, alongside nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles. [1]
