title: "Pendulum® Probiotics"
---

Pendulum is a gut and metabolic supplement. That is what it was built for, that is what the company's own research looks at, and that is the honest frame for anyone buying it in a dermatology office.

What makes it worth stocking is what is inside it. Nearly every probiotic on a drugstore shelf is built from the same short list of bacteria, and the reason is not that those are the ones your gut needs most. It is that they are the ones that survive being grown, dried and packed. Pendulum's headline organism lives deep in the oxygen-free part of your large intestine, in the slippery lining that sits between your gut wall and everything passing through it. Air kills it. Getting it into a capsule alive is a manufacturing problem before it is a health one, which is why almost nobody sells it.

That is a real difference and we are happy to explain it. It is also not a skin treatment, and you will not find a sentence on this page pretending otherwise.

**What it is good for**

- Supporting the gut lining, which is what the headline organism does where it lives
- Gut and metabolic health, which is what the products were formulated around
- People who already take a probiotic and want one built on something other than the usual short list
- Anyone who would rather buy a supplement from a practice that will tell them where the evidence stops
- Taking on its own terms, alongside your dermatology plan rather than instead of any part of it

Search "probiotics and skin" and you will find dermatology practices publishing articles that say probiotics reduce acne severity, rebuild your skin barrier and reverse premature aging. Several of them run the identical article, word for word, with no citations under any of it. It is good marketing. It is not something a board-certified dermatology practice should put its name to.

Here is what is actually true. There is real research into the connection between the gut and the skin, some of it promising, and it is nowhere near settled. Strain matters, dose matters, and the condition matters, and a finding about one bacterium in one study does not transfer to the bottle in your hand. No probiotic treats acne, rosacea, eczema or psoriasis the way the actual treatments for those conditions do.

So we carry Pendulum for what it is: a well-made supplement for gut and metabolic health, from a company that solved a hard manufacturing problem, sold by people who will answer a straight question with a straight answer. If you want it, we will get it to you. If you are hoping it will do something we do not believe it does, we will say so first, and then we will show you the thing that actually works on the problem you came in with.

There is a version of this page that says probiotics clear acne and heal eczema. Plenty of practices run it, some word for word from the same syndicated article. You will not find it here, because a dermatology practice trades on being believed and we intend to keep that.

What we will do instead is stock a product that is genuinely hard to make, tell you what it was built for, and be clear about which parts of the story are settled and which are still being researched. You can ask that question at our San Luis Obispo office and get an answer that is not a sales pitch, in the same visit as [the products we carry](/treatments/skin-care-products/) for your skin and whatever we are already treating.

**Pendulum is probably a good fit if:**

- You are interested in gut and metabolic health for its own sake
- You already take a probiotic and want one built on something other than the usual short list
- You want to buy a supplement from somewhere that will tell you where the evidence stops
- You can take a capsule daily and stay with it long enough to judge it

**We will steer you somewhere else if:**

- You are hoping it will clear a skin condition, which is a job for your treatment plan
- Your immune system is compromised, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, without your physician's sign-off
- You are medically complex enough that any new supplement should go past your treating clinician first
- What is actually bothering you is hair thinning, where a different product has the research behind it

Not sure which of those you are? Ask us at your next visit. This is a conversation, not a checkout.

Most people take it and notice nothing except, after a while, better digestive comfort. Some people get gas, bloating or a change in bowel habits in the first several days while things settle. Take it with food, give it a fair run, and tell us if something does not settle.

**Do**

- Take one capsule daily with food, as the label directs
- Store it the way the label says, which for live cultures is not optional
- Keep taking your prescribed treatment exactly as prescribed
- Give it long enough to judge before you decide either way

**Don't**

- Swap out anything in your medical plan for a supplement
- Assume every probiotic on a shelf is interchangeable with this one
- Start it without checking first if you are immunocompromised, pregnant or breastfeeding
- Push through gut symptoms that are worsening rather than settling

Call us about anything severe, worsening or simply not what we described. We would far rather hear from you.

Pendulum is priced per product and per subscription by the manufacturer, and what you pay depends on which formulation makes sense for you. We will tell you the price before you commit to anything, and we will tell you if the answer is that you do not need it.

If a cheaper option would serve you better, that is what you will hear.

**Q: Will a probiotic clear my skin?**

The gut and skin connection is a real and active area of research, and it is not settled. For acne, rosacea, eczema or psoriasis, the treatments built for those conditions are what will move your skin, and that is what your plan here is for.

**Q: What makes this different from a drugstore probiotic?**

What is in it. Most shelf probiotics use the same short list of bacteria, mainly because those are the ones that grow easily and survive being packed into a capsule. The organism this product is built around is neither, and keeping it alive in a capsule is the hard part.

**Q: What is that bacterium called?**

It lives in the slippery mucus lining of your gut, cannot tolerate oxygen, and goes by the name Akkermansia muciniphila. You will see it written that way on the box and in the research. It is the reason the product exists rather than a marketing flourish.

**Q: What is it actually made for?**

Gut and metabolic health. That is what the products are formulated around and what the company's own research looks at.

**Q: Can I take it alongside my treatment?**

Usually yes, if nothing in your history makes a live-culture supplement unsuitable. It sits alongside your plan rather than replacing anything in it.

**Q: Is it safe?**

For most people, supplements like this are well tolerated. If your immune system is compromised, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your physician before starting any live-culture product. Dietary supplements are not reviewed by the FDA before they go on sale, which is a good reason to buy them somewhere that will give you a straight answer about whether you need one.
