title: "HydraScalp®"
---

Your scalp is skin. It is skin you never exfoliate, never properly cleanse, and cover daily in dry shampoo, styling product and whatever the water in your area leaves behind. Then you wonder why it itches, flakes or feels greasy two days after washing.

HydraScalp treats it like skin. The same technology behind [a HydraFacial](/treatments/hydrafacial/) is used on your head: it lifts away dead skin, oil and product buildup from around the follicles, then delivers a nourishing serum into the skin underneath rather than onto the hair sitting over it. Shampoo cannot do the second part, and no shampoo you buy is designed to.

It takes under an hour, there is nothing to recover from, and your scalp feels noticeably different when you walk out. It is comfortable enough that people book it the way they book a facial.

**What HydraScalp is good at**

- Clearing product and dry shampoo buildup that ordinary washing leaves behind
- Settling an itchy, tight scalp that feels irritated no matter what you wash it with
- Reducing the visible flaking that shows on dark clothing
- Balancing a scalp that goes greasy within a day or two of washing
- Getting hydration into the skin rather than onto the hair
- Giving hair a cleaner starting point at the root, where it grows from

This is where a dermatology practice is a different proposition from a spa, and it is worth two minutes of reading before you book anything anywhere.

Flaking, itching and irritation on a scalp have several different causes that look nearly identical to the person they are happening to, and they do not all want the same answer.

What is actually going onWhat it looks likeWhat it needsProduct and oil buildupGreasy roots within a day or two, dull hair, flakes that are more like grime than skinA treatment like this one. It is exactly the problem HydraScalp was built forA genuinely dry scalpFine flaking, tightness, worse in winter or after sun and salt waterHydration and a gentler routine. This helps, and so does changing what you wash withDandruffLarger, oilier flakes that keep coming back no matter how well you washA medicated approach. A scalp facial makes it feel better without changing why it is happeningAn inflamed scalp conditionRedness, scaling in patches, sometimes soreness rather than itchA diagnosis and treatment first. A cleansing treatment over an inflamed scalp is not the right orderThinning or sheddingWider part, more hair in the brush, scalp showing throughA different conversation entirely. See below

We look before we treat. If what you have is buildup or dryness, this is the right treatment and you will feel it the same day. If it is something that needs treating medically, we will say so and treat that first, and this can come afterward when it will actually hold.

A scalp treatment is a pleasant hour anywhere that offers one. What you cannot get everywhere is someone qualified to tell you whether a scalp treatment is the right answer for what is on your head. Flaking that keeps coming back, patches that are sore rather than itchy, and a part that has quietly widened are three different problems, and only one of them is solved by cleaning.

So here is the clear line, because it matters. **This is a scalp care treatment.** It cleans and hydrates the skin your hair grows out of, and a healthier scalp is a better place to grow hair from. For regrowth itself, there are treatments built for that. If [thinning or shedding](/conditions/hair-loss/) is what actually brought you here, say so when you book, because that is a different appointment with different options, including [PRF made from your own blood](/treatments/platelet-rich-fibrin-prf/)) and [a supplement with a study behind it](/treatments/nutrafol/). Plenty of people end up doing both. Nobody should do this one expecting the other.

**HydraScalp is probably a good fit if:**

- Your scalp itches, flakes or feels tight and you have worked through several shampoos already
- You use dry shampoo, styling product or hard water and your roots feel coated
- Your scalp goes greasy within a day or two of washing
- You are already doing something about your hair and want the scalp in better shape underneath
- You want a treatment with no recovery attached to it

**We will steer you somewhere else if:**

- Your scalp is broken, infected or actively inflamed right now, which is treated first
- You have flaking or scaling that has never been looked at, which needs a diagnosis first
- What is actually worrying you is thinning hair, which is a different appointment
- You have had a recent scalp procedure that needs to settle

Not sure which of those you are? Say so when you book. Sorting that out takes two minutes and saves you paying for the wrong thing.

Nothing dramatic. Your hair is damp when you leave, and your scalp usually feels cleaner and calmer right away. Some people get mild redness, tenderness or a little itching for a few hours, and it settles on its own the same day.

**Do**

- Tell us about scalp conditions, allergies and recent scalp procedures beforehand
- Let your hair dry naturally that day if you can
- Go back to your normal washing routine the next day
- Tell us what your scalp is like a week later, because that shapes what we suggest next

**Don't**

- Reach straight for dry shampoo the next morning
- Use a harsh clarifying shampoo or a scrub on the same day
- Color or chemically treat your hair on the same day
- Expect a treatment to fix a routine that is causing the problem

Tell us about anything that does not settle within a day, and about anything sore rather than itchy. We would far rather hear from you.

HydraScalp treats the skin your hair grows out of. Pick a concern to see how we approach it.

HydraScalp is priced per session, and how many you want depends on what your scalp is like and what you are doing at home. Plenty of people have one, change two things about their routine and are happy. Some prefer it as regular upkeep.

We will tell you which of those you are before you book a series. If cleaning is not what your scalp needs, a series of cleaning treatments is not a good use of your money and we would rather say so.

**Q: Will this help my hair grow?**

No, and we would rather say that plainly. This treats the skin your hair grows out of, and healthier skin is a better place to grow hair from, but it is not a hair loss treatment and it does not regrow hair. If thinning is what brought you here, tell us when you book and we will talk about the options that do address it.

**Q: Is it just a fancy shampoo?**

No. Washing works on hair. This works on the skin underneath, lifting buildup from around the follicles and putting hydration into the scalp itself. It is closer to a facial than to a wash, which is why your scalp feels different rather than just your hair.

**Q: Does it hurt?**

No. Most people find it pleasant. You feel suction and coolness, and the whole thing is comfortable enough that people book it in a lunch hour.

**Q: How often should I have it?**

That depends on your scalp and your routine, and you will get a straight answer after we look. Some people want one and a change of shampoo. Others prefer it as upkeep every few weeks. You will know which one you are before you book anything.

**Q: What if my flaking keeps coming back?**

Then cleaning is probably not the whole answer, and that is useful information rather than a failure. Persistent flaking often needs a medicated approach or a diagnosis. That is a conversation we can have in the same practice on the same day.

**Q: Can I have it with a HydraFacial?**

Yes, and people often do. Same technology, two different areas, one appointment. Ask when you book and we will schedule the time for both.

HydraFacial® is a registered trademark of HydraFacial LLC and HydraScalp® is a trademark of its owner. This is a scalp care treatment and is not a treatment for hair loss. Temporary redness, tenderness or itching of the scalp can occur and usually settles the same day. This treatment is not performed where the scalp is infected, broken or inflamed, or over a condition that needs medical treatment first. Tell us about scalp conditions, allergies and recent scalp procedures before your appointment. Individual results may vary. Cosmetic consultations are $125, paid at booking and credited toward the cost of treatment.
